Common Questions...

Why is your website called “Free Mandolin Videos” when you also sell videos?

It’s a lot like your grocery store when they hand out free samples in the produce department. We have produced a large number of very high quality free lessons that we are happy to give to you so that you’ll get a taste of our teaching style, professionalism and content. Then, just like the grocer, we hope you’ll purchase some of our Premium Download lessons. The proceeds from their sale is what makes the free lessons possible. (In other words, we have to sell some products to “keep the lights on” and keep the site alive.)

Where do I find the free videos lessons?

Free lessons are marked with this image: free and

Premium lessons are marked with this image: premium throughout the site.

Probably the easiest way to find all of the free lessons is to look at this list.

What is the difference between a free lesson and a Premium Download lesson?

Our free lessons are generally 5 to 8 minutes long and will teach you some of the basic techniques required to play the mandolin. Our Premium Download lessons are around 15-25 minutes long and take a more in-depth look at mandolin concepts and techniques. The premium lessons also include a PDF file with the tab and/or chords used in the lesson. Most lessons include several MP3 audio tracks for additional practice help.

What do I need to download and use the Premium Download lessons?

You will need a high speed internet connection to download them since they are fairly large files. You may need to download the newest free version of the Quicktime player to watch the videos. You will also receive a .pdf file with the tablature for the lesson. You may need to download a free version of Adobe Reader.

What is QuickTime?

QuickTime is a computer video format created by Apple. You’ll need it in order to watch the videos. It is available for Macs and PCs. You may already have QuickTime on your computer, but if you don’t you can get the latest version of the QuickTime player for free here.

By the way, you can test to see if you already have QuickTime by playing this test movie: Test QuickTime If it plays fine you are already good to go!

What is a PDF file?

A PDF file is a digital file format for sending documents from one person to another. PDF stands for Portable Document Format. PDF files eliminate the need for both parties to have the same fonts installed. We use this format to send you the tablature, notation and chord charts for each Premium Download. Most computers already have the ability to read and display PDF files. If yours does not you can download a free version of Adobe Reader here. You can also print out the PDF files on your own printer if you like.

After I place my order for a Premium Download what happens? How to I get the files?

You will get an email with a link for downloading the lesson. Follow the instructions in the email to download the files to your computer. The video will come in a .zip file. You will receive a link to the file on your invoice and a link will also be sent to the e-mail address listed under the shipping address.

I am a beginner. How do I know in what order I should study the lessons?

To assist students, Brad has prepared a checklist of all mandolin lessons on the site and has listed them in the order which he feels is best for making the most rapid progress in learning to play. To download the most recent version of "Suggested Order of Study & Checklist" in PDF format for free click here.

This also makes a good checklist for keeping track of which lessons you’ve studied.

Can I get the lessons on a DVD so I can watch them on my television?

Yes. Some of them. We are gradually creating DVDs of some of the most popular lessons. You can view the available mandolin DVDs here.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! Whenever you have 6 items in your cart you get the lowest priced item free! More information on discounts is available here. If you are on our e-mailing list we will often notifiy you of additional discounts whenever new lessons become available.

How do I get on the e-mail notification list? Do I have to buy anything?

It’s easy. Just go to this page and send us an email asking to be on the list. You don’t have to buy anything.

Who do I contact for help if I have technical difficulties with the download process?

If you have trouble email our technical staff. They’ll be happy to help.

How can I send comments or make suggestions for future lessons?

You can send Brad an email. If you would like to see comments from other people go to Brad’s Mail Bag.
