What’s so cool about Tuned Pale Ale? Well, the bottle is designed to be as musical as possible. The label has markers that indicate what note will be played when you blow across the mouth of the bottle with that much beer left. So with a few bottles you could play a melody or make chords. The bottle itself also has ridges built in so that you could use a bottle cap to play it like a percussion instrument. Unfortunately, they are still looking for mass distribution, so you can’t really buy it. But hopefully someone else will pick up on this idea of figure it out for a mass produced bottled beer.

There’s no shortage of musicians looking for a good place to rehearse. Either the neighbors complain, you can’t leave the drum set there, or there’s not a place you can afford. Hoping to provide a solution for many is the JamHub silent rehearsal studio. These devices allow each member of the band to plug in their mics/instruments and then also control the mix of what’s coming into their individual headphones. There are three models available: The 4 person Bedroom for $300, the 6 person Greenroom for $500, and the 6 person TourBus that has additional features at $700.

I’d imagine most people would be looking at the Bedroom and Greenroom versions. Depending on the model you get, you can record directly to a computer or SD Ram card, use a built in metronome, or use built in effects. All versions would be easy to use with a couple of guitars and a bass. Using drums is where it gets a little tricky. If you have electric drums, then no problem. If you don’t, you’d have to mic the drums and not play extremely loud, or just have to deal with the noise. Either way, it seems like a possible answer for musicians stuck in dorm rooms or cramped city apartments. And I’d imagine more than a few frustrated parents would be willing to purchase one.

Are you looking for a way to practice your electric guitar on the road without having to lug an amp and effects pedals around? The iRig by AmpliTube ($39.99) allows you to plug your electric guitar directly into your iPhone. You can also run a separate jack to a pair of headphones so that you can practice quietly in a hotel room. Plug into some speakers or a mixer for a more portable effects setup. With their free AmpliTube app you can add the sound of three different stomp boxes and a guitar amp and cabinet. The LE version and Full version offer even more settings.

I Heart Guitar did an interview with Kevin Grover of Grover Allman Picks. Check out this excerpt then read the whole interview:

When did you start the company?

The company started in 1990, there were no Australian made guitar picks back then. We invested a small amount of money and had an amazing response from our Australian retailers, as they say – the rest is history. Grover Allman now exports to over 25 countries and has sold in excess of 30 million guitar picks.

Do you remember your very first pick? I still have mine, and it makes me all nostalgic to drag it out and think about all the bad notes I must have played with it…

I do remember my first guitar pick; it came from one of our current competitors, however I don’t have it anymore. It was a brown medium celluloid.

The first guitar pick that our company made I still have. We made a small test production run to trial our tooling and the picks are now kept in a big glass jar. They were .85mm white nylons. We still sell them today as our performer series. Every time I look at the jar I reflect upon where it all started and where we are today.

Who are some of your star clients?

We have a lot of star clients on our books now. Please forgive me if I have left your band off my list as there are so many, there is no order of importance here, just what came to my head – Motley Crue, Bleeding Through, Klaxons, Extreme, Silverchair, Nuno Bettencourt, Nick Sterling, Suicide Silence, Living End, Cannibal Corpse, Slash, Joe Robinson, Bring Me The Horizon, Rammstein and many more.
