A usual path of progress for a guitarist is learning how to play faster. The first part of the process is actually practicing to obtain the technical skill. But another aspect is figuring out what works as a fast line. And also how to use speed effectively as opposed to just playing everything fast. In his newest premium lesson, Double Time Lines in Cm, Guy Fenocchi tackles these topics. Playing over a funky jam track in C, Guy will teach you a series of lines containing 16th note ideas where you might normally use 8th notes. This is good introduction to really thinking about rhythm while you’re soloing. It’s easy to get wrapped up in just note choices, but rhythmic ideas can really set a solo apart. Somewhere between beginner lessons and soloing, rhythm guitar often gets lost in the guitar instruction world. So most guitarists are left to finding chords for their favorite songs and then creating or mimicking strum patterns and other techniques. Our newest premium lesson, Blues Standards Rhythm Lesson 1, hopes to help fill that void. In the lesson Jody walks you through playing rhythm for three blues tunes (Cold Shot, The Thrill is Gone, and Baby Please Don’t Go). The songs come from our Let’s Jam! Blues Standards collection and this downloadable lesson includes 90 second sampler .mp3s of those jam tracks. During the video Jody will discuss his right hand and left hand techniques. In addition to strum patterns the use of muting/choking can provide much of the feel for a rhythm guitar part. Through the teaching of the songs, Jody will show you the tips that will help improve your overall rhythm playing for any song. Watch the demo video below or view the lesson page for more details.

When attempting to recreate Wes Montgomery’s jazz soloing style, two main techniques come to the forefront. First, is Wes’ use of his thumb to strum. And the other technique is using octaves. Wes would play a riff as pairs of octave notes. This gave him a distinct style compared to the more widely used single note lines. In Wes Montgomery Style Octaves, Guy will cover both the left hand strumming technique and the octave riffs. The lesson will cover five different licks that will be taught and then demonstrated over a backing track. Watch the demo below to hear this technique or check out the lesson page.

Jody Worrell has two new premium lessons that will teach you the basics of country guitar soloing. In Easy Country Solos 1 & 2 Jody will cover the same type of techniques he teaches in his more advanced lessons. However in this video, we’ll tackle them at a much more reasonable pace for the intermediate player. Jody will provide detailed instruction on how to play the array of twangy bends that help create country’s signature sound. Check out the lesson page or the demos below for more details.

Jody Worrell has a new two part lesson that will teach you an electric guitar solo over a rocking progression of A7, D7, and E7. In a break from using the Minor Pentatonic Scale, these solos follow the chord progression pretty closely. There are also parts of the solo where Jody will mimic and embellish the bass line from the track. The solos are taught in detail and then demonstrated along with the rhythm track. Each download includes a Quicktime video, a .pdf of the tabs, and four .mp3s to practice along with. Check out the Rockin 12 Bar Solo in A page for more information or just view the demos below.
