Thanks to the Guitar Shop Blog for exposing us to this Guitar World interview with Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. He starts off by talking about how he came to write Cult of Personality from a lyrical standpoint. Which he eventually sums up like this:
“So the song Cult of Personality, still has an incredible resonance, many years later, because it speaks to something that’s an ongoing… the human condition, it’s an ongoing conversation. You know for right, for good, and for ill. And uhh… you know… it’s a cool riff.”
And it’s at that point, the 3:00 minute mark, that Vernon begins to show you how to play that cool riff.
