D Tuning Instructions

This free video lesson by Geoff Hohwald will teach you how to retune your banjo to "D Tuning." This tuning is used in songs such as Reuben and is a refreshing change from the standard G tuning we are accustomed to.

Here are the notes for each string in D Tuning:

  • 1st String - D (same as in normal G tuning)
  • 2nd String - A (2 frets lower than in G tuning)
  • 3rd String - F# (1 fret lower than in G tuning)
  • 4th String - D (same as in normal G tuning)
  • 5th String - A (2 frets higher than in G tuning) or F# (1 fret lower than in G tuning)
