This free guitar lesson by Peter Vogl is a follow up lesson to our first lesson on hammer ons and pull offs. We'll go a little further in depth to improve your strength and accuracy when using these techniques. We will use the first and third fingers in these exercises but you should really practice with all of your fingers.

Hammer ons are when we pick one note and hammer on to another using a finger on our left hand. In this lesson, we are going to do hammer ons and pull offs with a finger already down. Here is our first exercise

Now let's try this on all the strings

Pull offs are when we pick a note that we have a finger on and then pull off with the finger on the left hand to a lower note. In this case, just reverse the process from before. Put both your 1st and 3rd finger down on the 5th string at the 2nd fret and the 4th fret third string. Then pull off your third finger.

Try this on all six strings.

You can combine hammer ons and pull offs as well. Here is a combination hammer on, pull off in the same spot.

You can also play this as a continuous lick, which then becomes a trill.
Be sure to practice these exercises. To advance as a guitarist you will need the ability to play fluid and accurate hammer ons and pull offs.
