In this free rock guitar lesson by Peter Vogl we will learn several licks that we can play over a funky one chord vamp in the key of E. In the video we will use the backing track "funk in E", which is track 10 from the Let's Jam! Blues and Rock CD. This lesson will give you three licks to learn. There are many approaches you could take when only one chord is being played. You could use the E minor Pentatonic Scale, E Major Pentatonic, the E Blues Scale, E Bebop licks, or the E Mixolydian scale. Remember to use chord shapes or arpeggios as well.

Now let's look at the lick from that scale. (listen to the lick)

This next lick uses the major pentatonic scale with a couple of notes borrowed from the minor pentatonic scale. So let's review the E Major Pentatonic Scale in the 2nd Position. (listen to this scale)

Now let's learn a lick out of that scale. (listen to this lick)

Let's take a second to learn the E Blues Scale.

The next lick uses the E blues scale but with a slightly different fingering. (listen to this lick)

Major Pentatonic Licks by Jody Worrell is a Quicktime video that looks at how to solo using the major pentatonic scale. We'll move the scale up and down the neck and include double stops, hammer ons, and pull offs to learn how to sculpt a solo. We'll also use double stop riffs out of this Major Pentatonic scale to embellish your rhythm playing.
